words to live by

I had the great pleasure of seeing Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel at the Mill Valley Film Festival tonight. The passion with which the iconic tastemaker worked and lived in fashion really resonated with me. I adored every moment of this beautiful, funny, moving portrait of the twentieth century's foremost arbiter of style.

can i kick it?

Post-Isabel Marant 'Betty', I'd been on the hunt for an affordable alternative to the reimagined sneaker. Then, a couple weeks ago I spotted a ten-year-old wearing the shoes I've been searching for - classic tennis shoe styling with a modern spin. These padded high top Chucks are the perfect combination of fresh and familiar.
What I wore for a Sunday of vintage shopping - striped H&M dress, worn denim jacket, shoulder-grazing hoop earrings a la Basketball Wives, and my AA-inspired homesewn clutch.

Kicks are for kids?

trippin'

Last month I spent a weekend in Chico visiting family and scaring the locals with my sartorial selections. Maxi skirts and high waisted anythings aren't really of-the-moment where my taller, whiter relatives reside. In the land of big box stores and the big trucks they fill, I'm always inspired to dress big.
My grandma wasn't too fond of 'that thing going on with [my] head' but she thought my dollar bill ring was 'pretty neat.'
A $10 manicure and Best Western night later, we drove home listening to blues with the windows down. Chico, there's nothing wrong with going big.

a good eye

On a recent family car ride, I heard my mom sigh after I finished explaining my aversion to some recent trend. "There are just so many things you don't like," she lamented.

Picky, particular, discerning or selective - regardless of the adjective, the implication is the same - that my dislikes outweigh my likes. But here, and in my everyday life, I choose to focus my attention, energy, eyes and ears on the things that I do like.

So while my family teases me for my collection of nearly-identical black sweaters and my friends roll their eyes at my exhaustion from an all-night eBay bidding war for the perfect duvet cover, I enjoy living a carefully-curated life.

This blog is my love letter to the things that bring me joy and a chronicle of my ever-evolving taste.

P.S. Until a fly SLR-toting manfriend comes along, it's just me and my camera. No, I'm not loving the c.2004 Myspace mirror pics but what's a girl to do?
P.P.S. I'm moving all my content (all eight posts!) from my tumblr to start fresh here on blogspot. I'll include the original posting dates (mainly just because I want the credit for discovering amazing artists like Jon Stich and Azealia Banks first haha).
